Infertility

Several gynecological conditions which can cause infertility, include endometriosis, pelvic adhesions, blockage of the fallopian tubes (hydrosalpinx) and, in some cases, uterine fibroids. The Georgia Advanced Surgery Center for Women can successfully treat these conditions using laparoscopic surgical techniques that enable same-day, outpatient procedures without unsightly incisions or hospital stays and with fast, nearly painless recovery. We also use laparoscopy for the reopening of previously “tied tubes” to achieve pregnancy.

Surgical Treatment Options

Laparoscopic excision of endometriosis is used to treat infertility (and pain) caused by endometriosis, as well as to remove scar issue, and is recommended before infertility patients undergo IVF (in vitro fertilization). The Georgia Advanced Surgery Center is able to treat very advanced cases of endometriosis with this approach. Our techniques include complete identification of the anatomy, enabling complete and safe removal of the endometriosis without injury to the female reproductive organs as well as the bowel, bladder, ureters and large blood vessels.

Laparoscopic salpingostomy is the surgical creation of an artificial opening in a blocked fallopian tube in order to restore fertility to a woman whose tubes are damaged, or are blocked and filled with fluid (hydrosalpinx). The presence of a hydrosalpinx decreases the likelihood that an IVF procedure will succeed. Infertility specialists will often request that a hydrosalpinx be removed prior to IVF to maximize success rates of this costly treatment. This can be done in a minimally invasive laparoscopic fashion as an outpatient with virtually no down time. Laparascopic tubal reversal, is a minimally invasive procedure for reversing tubal ligation.
